This listing is for a genuine 1745 British Shilling of King George II, struck in sterling silver (.925 fine). This historic coin carries the famous LIMA mark beneath the bust, denoting that it was struck from silver captured from the Spanish treasure fleets near Lima, Peru, during Admiral Anson’s circumnavigation.

Unlike ordinary coinage, these pieces were minted as a direct celebration of Britain’s naval supremacy, proudly announcing to the world that the silver came not from trade, but from enemy treasure seized at sea. As such, the 1745 LIMA shillings stand as some of the most storied and collectable coins of the entire Georgian period.

Historical Context

In the 1740s, during the War of Jenkins’ Ear, Admiral George Anson led a squadron that intercepted Spanish treasure ships carrying bullion from South America. Vast quantities of silver were seized and transported back to Britain, where it was delivered to the Royal Mint. To commemorate the victory, the coins struck from this plundered silver were stamped with the word LIMA.

The obverse shows a laureate bust of George II facing left with the inscription GEORGIVS II DEI GRATIA (“George II, by the Grace of God”). Beneath the bust is the key feature: the bold LIMA mark. The reverse depicts a cruciform arrangement of crowned shields for England, Scotland, Ireland, and France, with the badge of the Order of the Garter at the centre, the date 1745 divided above.

Collectors’ Notes

The 1745 LIMA issue is one of the most famous of all British silver coins, collected not only for its numismatic value but also for its direct and romantic connection to captured Spanish treasure. Every piece is a tangible relic of Britain’s naval triumphs and its expanding empire. Shillings are the most accessible denomination of the series, but coins with strong detail and a clear LIMA mark remain in high demand.
