1822 George IV Farthing – Copper – Laureate Head – Early Milled Issue – Scarce Original Example

This listing is for a genuine 1822 Copper Farthing of King George IV, struck at the Royal Mint, London. This early milled copper issue features the handsome laureate portrait by Benedetto Pistrucci and the seated Britannia reverse — a continuation of the classical designs that defined British coinage through the early 19th century.

This example shows a pleasant mid-brown tone with traces of original mint colour and natural circulation lustre. Strong definition remains across both sides, particularly in the King’s portrait and Britannia’s figure, with smooth surfaces and minimal marks — a highly collectible piece from the first copper coinage of George IV’s reign.

Historical Context

The farthings of 1821–1823 represent the first copper coinage struck under King George IV, replacing the older issues of his father, George III. These coins were among the earliest mass-produced on modern steam-powered presses at the Royal Mint, part of the continuing industrialisation of British coinage following Matthew Boulton’s pioneering work at Soho.

Issued in relatively modest numbers and heavily used in commerce, few examples survive in such well-preserved, evenly toned condition. The 1822 date is particularly desirable for its clear, crisp portrait engraving and low survival rate in higher grades.

Collectors’ Notes

Early copper issues of George IV are increasingly sought after for their artistry and historical importance. The 1822 farthing is scarcer than later dates and is often missing from type sets in pleasing condition. A charming and genuine piece of Regency-era coinage.
