1853 Victoria One Penny – Early Young Head Type – Mid-Victorian Issue – Even Chestnut Toning

This listing is for a genuine 1853 Copper One Penny of Queen Victoria, struck at the Royal Mint, London. The 1853 issue forms part of the early “Young Head” series by William Wyon, a design that defined the Victorian coinage of the mid-nineteenth century.

This example shows clear detail and an attractive mid-brown patina, with Britannia and the portrait both well defined. Light circulation wear is visible but the fields remain smooth and evenly coloured, showing natural surface tone and honest preservation.

Historical Context

The 1853 penny belongs to the final phase of the large copper coinage before the introduction of bronze coinage in 1860. These issues circulated widely during a period of major industrial growth and expanding commerce across the British Empire, and few survive today in such even and natural condition.

Collectors’ Notes

The 1853 Penny is a desirable mid-Victorian issue, increasingly scarce in wholesome, original state. A strong representative example for collectors of the Young Head copper series or a 19th-century British type set.
