This listing is for a genuine 1860 British Farthing, struck in the reign of Queen Victoria. The year 1860 is of special significance, marking the very first issue of bronze coinage in Britain and representing a major transition from the heavier copper coinage that had been used previously. For type collectors and specialists alike, the 1860 farthing is a cornerstone piece — and examples in premium condition such as this are seldom offered on the open market.
Historical Context
The shift from copper to bronze coinage in 1860 was a landmark in Victorian numismatics. The new bronze alloy allowed the Royal Mint to produce coins that were both more durable and more finely detailed, heralding a new era for Britain’s small change. The farthing, valued at one-quarter of a penny, was an essential coin for everyday life in Victorian Britain, especially among the working classes, and so most surviving pieces saw heavy wear in circulation.
The obverse portrait, designed by Leonard Charles Wyon, features the young Queen Victoria facing left with a laurel wreath in her hair — a style widely referred to as the “bun head.” The reverse shows Britannia seated with shield and trident, accompanied by a lighthouse to the left and a sailing ship to the right, a proud symbol of Britain’s naval power and global reach.
Coin Details
This 1860 farthing is struck in bronze, measuring 20 millimetres and weighing approximately 4.7 grams. The obverse carries the legend VICTORIA D:G: BRITT: REG: F:D. (“Victoria by the Grace of God, Queen of the Britons, Defender of the Faith”). The reverse legend reads FARTHING with the date below, encircling Britannia in her classical form.
Condition
This is a truly exceptional example of the 1860 bronze farthing. The coin displays superb original lustre with much of the surface retaining its mint brilliance, a quality very rarely encountered on coins of this age. Detail is sharp, strike is crisp, and the fields are clean with only minimal handling. Collectors will appreciate the rich colour and eye appeal which firmly place this coin at the top end of the grading spectrum. Surviving examples in this state are scarce and command a significant premium.
Collectors’ Notes
The 1860 farthing is a key date as the first year of issue for the new bronze series, making it a must-have type coin for any serious British collection. While circulated examples are readily available, coins of this calibre are seldom seen and are keenly pursued by collectors. Comparable examples certified by NGC or PCGS in Mint State have realised prices well in excess of £200 at major sales.
