1892 Great Britain Florin – Queen Victoria Jubilee Head – Sterling Silver
This listing is for a genuine 1892 British Florin (Two Shillings) struck in sterling silver (.925) during the reign of Queen Victoria. It forms part of the Jubilee coinage series (1887–1892), which introduced the famous “Jubilee Head” portrait designed by Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm.
The 1892 florin is one of the final issues of this short-lived design type, which was replaced in 1893 by the “Veiled Head” coinage.
Historical Context
The florin was first introduced in 1849 as part of Britain’s early experiments with decimalisation, valued at one-tenth of a pound. By the Jubilee period, the florin had become a well-established denomination, bridging the gap between the shilling and the halfcrown.
The Jubilee Head portrait was introduced in 1887 to mark Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. Although controversial at the time for its depiction of the Queen in a small crown and veil, it remains one of the most distinctive portraits of her long reign. The 1892 florin represents the final year of this design type, making it historically important for collectors of Victorian silver.
