1903 Edward VII One Penny – Lustrous Bronze – Early Reign Issue – Superb Mint Example
This listing is for a genuine 1903 Bronze One Penny of King Edward VII, struck at the Royal Mint, London. This early issue from Edward’s reign is beautifully struck and retains strong original mint lustre across both obverse and reverse, showcasing the high production quality of the early 20th-century bronze series.
The coin displays a soft, golden-brown tone with traces of violet and olive iridescence under light — classic for well-preserved Edwardian bronze. Sharp detailing is present in Britannia’s trident and shield, and the King’s portrait retains crisp relief with minimal handling marks.
Historical Context
The 1903 Penny belongs to the early years of Edward VII’s short reign (1901–1910), a period noted for its transition from Victorian design traditions to a more modern, neoclassical style. These coins were the first bronze issues to carry Edward’s portrait by George William de Saulles, whose craftsmanship produced one of the most elegant profiles in British numismatics.
Surviving examples with strong lustre are increasingly scarce, as most were quickly absorbed into heavy circulation.
