1937 George VI Penny – Toned Lustrous Bronze – First Year of Issue – Superb Example

This listing is for a genuine 1937 Bronze Penny of King George VI, struck at the Royal Mint, London. This beautifully preserved example displays exceptional natural tone with traces of original mint lustre, showcasing attractive gold, rose, and subtle blue hues typical of well-stored early bronze coins.

The 1937 penny marks the first issue of George VI’s reign, following the abdication of Edward VIII, whose coinage never entered circulation. As such, it represents the beginning of a new era in British numismatics and remains a cornerstone for collectors of 20th-century coinage.

Historical Context

Following the abdication crisis of 1936, George VI ascended the throne, and a new portrait was prepared by sculptor Humphrey Paget. The 1937 coinage, introduced for the Coronation year, symbolised stability and renewal in a turbulent political period. Bronze pennies of this issue were struck to an exceptionally high standard, with crisp detail and a warm, lustrous finish that has made them enduring favourites with collectors.

Collectors’ Notes

The 1937 penny is a key transitional issue and the first of the George VI series. Toned lustrous examples are increasingly sought after, as most surviving pieces have dulled or spotted over time. This coin offers an exceptional blend of colour, lustre, and preservation — an outstanding addition to any British bronze collection.
